Providing Quality

Child to Staff Ratios and Group Size

Ratios and group size are one of the most important factors in providing quality care. The fewer children teachers are caring for, the better able they are to know children as individuals, develop relationships, and meet their needs. Smaller group sizes mean children have to get to know fewer children and adults. They have less competition for space, attention, toys and materials. The less commotion there is in the environment, the less stress for children and the better able they are to focus and learn. Yes, this (especially) includes infants and toddlers.

Below are the minimum requirements through the State of NH. For NAEYC Accreditation standards click here.

AgeRatioGroup Size
Under 1 year4:112
12-12 months5:115
2 years6:118
3 years8:124
4 years 12:124
5 years + 15:130

Under no circumstance should these minimum requirements be disrupted due to staffing issues. Substitutes, volunteers, directors and all staff should be willing to make sure they are flexible enough to support these ratio standards for the safety and well-being of the children in their care.
