• Child Observation, Record Keeping, and Assessment

Description
In this workshop, we will look at gross motor development stages and delve into their deeper purposes. Just how does the child develop balance, and what are the implications if this doesn't happen? What are the primitive reflexes, and how do they interfere with later school work if the child does not properly "integrate" them? Why is crawling important? How can we support the child's healthy development of balance and coordinated, fluid movements? What social and cultural influences affect motor development? Environmental considerations and development of observation skills will be addressed. We will look at research regarding children's self-initiated movement and its implications for physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. There will be opportunities for adults to gain insight into their own movement qualities and preferences. The workshop will be practical and experiential in nature, with time for questions and discussion.

Growing up from infancy to the pre-school years is a journey that begins in being part of the whole world and gradually leads to becoming a powerful individual. It is a time in which we as adults must determine appropriate boundaries, rhythms, and expectations for our children. At the same time, we must help them navigate the significant changes that come as they grow, and support the development of their new social skills. Conflict is a normal element in this process, and this workshop will explore the distinction between conflict and aggression.

Redefining Challenging Behaviors through an Understanding of Sensory Strategies

• Child Guidance and Discipline
• Creating Environments for Young Children

Description
We all use sensation to adjust our level of alertness. For example, when we are tired and have to concentrate, we may need to move in order to stay alert. However, when we are tired and need to go to sleep, we may choose a different sensory strategy such as covering up with a heavy blanket. For someone else, a light-weight down comforter is chosen. In this workshop it is hoped that the participants will gain more competency in recognizing and interpreting behavioral cues related to the child's particular sensory needs, and in developing proactive strategies to deal with them. Our own sensory preferences and their influence upon our interactions and communication with various children (and adults) will also be covered. There will be time for questions, discussion and experiential learning.
